INSPECTOR WALLACE

1977

THE FACE OF AUTHORITY

Inspector Wallace is a seasoned Toronto police officer whose career has been shaped by years of navigating the boundaries between law, order and human uncertainty.

Solid, deliberate and often intimidating, Wallace carries the authority of the institution he represents. To Jeff O’Brian, however, he represents something else as well—a difficult history between two men whose very different approaches to uncovering the truth have brought them into conflict before.

OLD TENSIONS

Wallace and Jeff O’Brian have crossed paths before, and their history has left little affection between them. Jeff’s instinct is to question, challenge and keep digging; Wallace is accustomed to investigations proceeding according to established rules and procedures.

When circumstances bring them together again in 1977, neither man has forgotten their previous encounters. Their conversations carry the weight of old disagreements—and the mutual frustration of two men who are more alike in their determination than either might care to admit.

AN UNEASY UNDERSTANDING

Wallace and Jeff approach the truth from very different directions. Wallace relies on procedure, evidence and the discipline of police work, while Jeff’s instincts as an investigative reporter push him to question assumptions and follow leads wherever they might go.

Their relationship is often marked by frustration and disagreement, but beneath the tension lies a growing recognition that each man is serious about finding the truth. As Jeff’s investigation progresses, their mutual distrust gradually gives way to a reluctant respect—though neither man is particularly inclined to admit it.
