The Story Behind the Book

A Mystery That Inspired Decades of Investigation

On July 8, 1917, Canadian artist Tom Thomson disappeared while canoeing on Canoe Lake in Ontario's Algonquin Park. His body was recovered eight days later, but the circumstances of his death have remained the subject of controversy and speculation for more than a century.

In the late 1980s, John Little and R.J. Anderson began their own investigation into the mystery. Their research took them to Algonquin Park, where they explored the waters of Canoe Lake, examined historical accounts, and consulted experienced Ontario Provincial Police homicide investigators.

What began as an effort to better understand the circumstances surrounding Thomson's death eventually evolved into a much larger creative undertaking.

The result is Larry Dixon's Cabin, a historical mystery novel that moves between two periods: the summer of 1917, when Thomson disappeared, and 1977, when fictional investigator Jeff O'Brian revisits the unanswered questions surrounding his death.

Blending documented historical events with fictional characters and imagined circumstances, the novel offers readers an opportunity to reconsider one of Canada's most enduring mysteries.

The historical research is real. The investigation within the novel is fictional. The mystery remains.
