BRIAN GARVEY

1977

THE MAN RUNNING THE NEWSROOM

Brian Garvey is the hard-edged editor who oversees Jeff O’Brian’s career at the Toronto Gazette. A veteran newspaperman shaped by the relentless pace of metropolitan journalism, he is gruff, impatient and often blunt to the point of discomfort.

Garvey has little tolerance for speculation. To him, facts are currency and credibility is everything—qualities that frequently put him at odds with a reporter like Jeff, whose investigative instincts have a habit of taking him beyond the boundaries of a straightforward assignment.

THE ASSIGNMENT

Garvey assigns Jeff what appears to be a straightforward newspaper feature: revisit the mysterious death of Canadian painter Tom Thomson on the sixtieth anniversary of the artist’s disappearance at Canoe Lake.

t is hardly the kind of assignment Jeff once would have pursued. But Garvey knows his reporter well enough to understand that beneath Jeff’s cynicism and battered reputation remains a sharp investigative mind—and an instinct for recognizing when a story may be more complicated than it first appears.

MORE THAN AN EDITOR

Garvey may question Jeff’s judgment and challenge his methods, but beneath their frequent clashes lies a deeper professional respect. He knows Jeff’s flaws, but he also knows the kind of reporter Jeff can be when a story truly captures his attention.

Their relationship is built on years of arguments, deadlines and difficult assignments—a complicated mixture of frustration, loyalty and trust. Garvey may rarely say it aloud, but he has not entirely given up on Jeff O’Brian.
