ANNIE & SHANNON FRASER

1917

THE HEART OF MOWAT LODGE

In the summer of 1917, the remote world of Canoe Lake revolved around Mowat Lodge, and at the centre of that small community stood Shannon and Annie Fraser.

Together they formed the human heart of the lodge—Shannon providing structure and authority, Annie bringing warmth and emotional complexity to a place where artists, guides and visitors briefly crossed paths in the vast wilderness of Algonquin Park.

SHANNON FRASER

As proprietor of Mowat Lodge, Shannon Fraser presides over one of the few outposts of civilization on Canoe Lake. Practical and resourceful, he manages the lodge and the steady stream of guides, artists and visitors who pass through its doors.

His relationship with Tom Thomson places Shannon close to the events of July 1917—and ultimately among those confronted with the uncertainty surrounding Thomson’s disappearance and death.

THE CROSSROADS OF CANOE LAKE

In 1917, Mowat Lodge is more than a wilderness retreat. It is a gathering place where guides, artists, tourists and local residents cross paths—and where news and rumours travel quickly.

For Tom Thomson, the lodge has become a familiar home base during his time in Algonquin Park. For the Frasers, it places them at the centre of the small community surrounding Canoe Lake and close to the events that will become part of the enduring mystery of Thomson’s death.

ANNIE FRASER

Annie Fraser brings a different presence to Mowat Lodge. Warm, perceptive and strong-willed, she understands the personalities around her and the complicated relationships that develop within the small Canoe Lake community.

Her connection with Tom Thomson adds another layer to the events of 1917. Like many aspects of Thomson’s final summer, exactly what passed between them remains open to interpretation—and becomes part of the mystery explored in Larry Dixon’s Cabin.

ANNIE AND TOM

Tom Thomson is more than simply another guest at Mowat Lodge. Over time, he becomes part of the small community surrounding the Frasers, and his relationship with Annie develops a familiarity of its own.

In Larry Dixon’s Cabin, their interactions become another thread in the complicated web of relationships surrounding Thomson during his final summer—a relationship whose significance takes on greater meaning after his death.

CONNECTIONS AND TENSIONS

Annie shared a meaningful personal connection with Tom Thomson, one that added a layer of complexity to the already delicate relationships within the lodge community.

Through Annie—and through the memories of people like Daphne Crombie—Thomson appears less as the distant, solitary artist history often remembers and more as a human figure moving within a web of friendships, loyalties and unspoken tensions.

THE KEEPERS OF CANOE LAKE

Shannon and Annie Fraser occupy a unique place in the story of Canoe Lake. As proprietors of Mowat Lodge, they live at the centre of the small community that surrounds Tom Thomson during the final weeks of his life.

Different in temperament but bound together by the lodge and the people who pass through it, the Frasers become witnesses to a summer whose events will continue to raise questions long after everyone involved is gone.
