PETE, THE BARTENDER

1977

A QUIET PLACE TO LAND

Pete owns Pete’s Bar in downtown Toronto, a familiar refuge for Jeff O’Brian away from the deadlines, pressures and personalities of the newspaper business.

A quiet and observant man, Pete has spent years watching journalists come and go from the stools in front of him. He has known Jeff long enough to remember when his name carried considerable weight in Toronto journalism—and has also watched from the sidelines as Jeff struggled through the difficult years that followed.

A FRIEND WHO LISTENS

Pete is not the kind of man who offers advice unless it is wanted. Most of the time, he simply listens while Jeff talks through whatever is troubling him—work, relationships or the latest turn in a story that refuses to leave him alone.

Years behind the bar have taught Pete when to speak and when to say nothing at all. He knows Jeff well enough to recognize when something is weighing on him, and his quiet presence gives Jeff something increasingly rare in his life: a place where he does not have to explain or defend himself.

A STEADY PRESENCE

Pete has no role in solving the mystery that increasingly consumes Jeff O’Brian, and he has little interest in becoming part of it. His importance to Jeff is simpler than that.

Through professional success, personal setbacks and the uncertainty that has followed him in recent years, Pete has remained much the same—a familiar face behind the bar, a trusted friend and a quiet reminder that some relationships endure without needing to be explained.
